Secret iOS code reveals Apple’s plan to introduce battery-saving feature for iPhone

Game-changer

For all the great technological advances we’ve had over the years, there’s one glaring omission that just drives us mad.

We have the know-how to send Tim Peake into space, let him live up there for a few months and then have him return safely but we don’t seem to be able to design a bloody smartphone with a battery that lasts more than 24 hours.

Instead we have to live our lives carrying around clunky phone chargers and praying we get that one seat on the train that actually has a working plug socket and hope that your mate’s phone uses the same kind of charger as yours.

But a secret bit of code in the latest iOS update for iPhones may have revealed Apple’s plans to make their phones’ batteries last longer.

According to developer Andrew Wiik, Apple’s new iOS 10 has “dark mode” capabilities which could have huge implications for future iPhones.

As its name implies, “dark mode” allows users to make the default background colour on all programmes black, which helps save battery in a very simple and almost invisible way by not relying on lots of white light for everything.

This could also mean Apple’s long-rumoured switch from LCD screens to OLED screens could finally be happening for the iPhone 7. OLED screens display a richer contrast between black and white, making them perfect for a power-saving phone with a black screen. The company have already introduced a dark mode setting for Apple TV.
