Probably the scariest-sounding flight of all time will fly for the last time today, Friday the 13th

A new meaning to the phrase 'Going straight to HEL'

Conor Heneghan

Godspeed to whoever was brave enough to get on board.

There’s no day where superstitions come into focus more than on Friday the 13th, widely considered for years and years to be the unluckiest day in the calendar year (it usually falls at least once and occasionally up to three times each year).

So if you’re feeling a bit nervous about what the day might bring, consider the plight of passengers aboard a Finnair flight from Copenhagen to Helsinki.

There’s bound to be a few nervous fliers on board and their state of mind won’t be helped by the fact that the number of the flight is 666 and that their destination is HEL, short, of course for Helsinki.

What’s more, the flight departed 20 minutes after the 13th hour of the day, but today’s flight will be the last of 21 times FinnAir has flown the route on Friday 13th since 2006.

“Today will actually be the final time that our AY666 flight flies to HEL,” a spokesperson for the airline told The Telegraph.

“As of October 29, some of our flight numbers in our network will change and our AY666 flight from Copenhagen to Helsinki will change to AY954.

“In 11 years, we’ve flown 21 times the AY666 flight to HEL on Friday the 13th.”

No doubt there will be an audible sigh of relief when it lands in Helsinki shortly before 4pm.
