An investigation is underway in India after shocking footage emerged of a five-year-old girl tied up and place on the roof in the sun as punishment for not finishing her homework.
The video of the girl was shared online on June 2, and shows her tied up and on her back in the scorching sun.
The incident took place in north-east Delhi’s Khajuri Khas area, where temperatures had reached 42C in on previous days.
In the disturbing footage captured by a neighbour, the girl can be heard screaming and crying whilst trying to free herself.
According to police, the mother of the girl confessed to them that she had placed her daughter on the roof as punishment for not finishing her homework.
One officer said: “A case under section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act has been registered at Khajuri Khas police station and further investigation is going on.”

The girl’s dad said he was not involved in the punishment and only discovered what had happened when his father called him.
He told the Hindustan Times : “I received a call from my father that my wife had given this severe punishment to our daughter and that I should come home.
“When I reached home, my father told me that he came home and saw the girl tied on the terrace, and freed her.
“My wife got angry and punished her. When my father told me, I scolded my wife a lot that day, but the next day, a relative from our village sent me the video and I scolded my wife again.”
Many have reacted with horror to the video.

Another added: “When I see the video, my heart is broken.”
One user tagged Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana and Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal, writing: “This is horrible. Please take note of this immediately.”
