Mars has responded to the rumours Maltesers will be changing to an oval shape

Michael Lanigan

The Earth isn’t flat… neither are Maltesers.

That isn’t a statement anybody thought they would ever have to put out there, but it sounds like we need to establish a few solid facts right now.

On Sunday (25 March), the world was momentarily flipped on its side when it was reported that Maltesers were expected to be changed from spheres to ovals in order to fight declining sales.

The information came from a newspaper source who claimed that they caught wind of these plans while auditioning for a new online advert, which was set to make the big reveal.

The source, who was invited to audition said: “We were told the Maltesers we would be holding would be flat — like a Minstrel.

Later, the source said: “We got on with it, but none of us thought flat Maltesers were a good idea.”

Well, suffice to say it wasn’t a good idea, because as it turns out, none of this will actually be happening. The sweets are round and will remain that way, they say.

Responding to the story, a spokesperson for Mars debunked the Flat Malteser theory, saying:

“We are not planning to change the shape of the much-loved original Maltesers, however we are continually looking at ways to extend the brand, creating new ways for our customers to enjoy Maltesers.”

With that, we can go back to our normal lives. The only person who need remain a skeptic is Jim Corr.
