These are the best pub quizzes in London

As recommended by wise JOE readers...

Carl Anka

Ah the pub quiz: a wonderful opportunity to get drunk, show off how smart you are, and argue with a couple of strangers.

We at JOE are taking a look at some of the funniest, most inventive and entertaining pub quizzes around the UK. You can send in suggestions for your city here via email, or by dropping us a line on Facebook.

Our first stop, LONDON.

EffraSocial

Effra Social, Brixton

When is it: Tuesdays at 8pm

How much does it cost: £5 per team

How many people per team: No more than six

Recommended by @Lucas_Howe, the Effra Social’s pub quiz is run by Tommy McTrivia, who brings us a quality night out. Lots of teams and hits that sweet spot of “challenging, but not bastard hard” with questions.

ClaphamNorth

The Clapham North, Clapham

When is it: Sundays at 8pm.

How much does it cost: £2 per member

How many people per team: No more than six

This tip came from @Hari_Sethi who promised us a healthy dose of competition with Clapham. Spot the intro and TV themes are popular round choices, so get amongst it.

The Arab Boy

The Arab Boy, Putney

When is it: Thursdays at 8.30pm

How much does it cost: £1 per member

How many people per team: Within reason

There’s a £40 prize for the top team in The Arab Boy’s pub quiz. A decent local boozer with good food to boot. We recommend the fish and chips.

TheOxford

The Oxford, Kentish Town

When is it: Tuesdays at 8pm

How much does it cost: £2 per member

How many people per team: No more than six

Double trouble is the theme of The Oxford’s pub quiz. Recommended to us by both @edjeff and @JamieCutteridge, The Oxford’s quiz asks you 50 questions, but there are only 25 answers. A good way to test your deduction skills as well as your general knowledge.

TheLexington

Rough Trade @ The Lexington, Angel

When is it: Mondays at 8pm

How much does it cost: £1 per member

How many people per team: No more than six

Writer @Mullane45 recommend what might be the hardest music pub quiz in London. Run by record obsessives from Rough Trade, this is for fans of rare vinyl and Kate Bush B-sides.

TheDogandBell

The Dog and Bell, Deptford

When is it: Sundays at 9pm

How much does it cost: £1 per member

How many people per team: No more than six

The Dog and Bell is a “proper pub”. Friendly atmosphere, loads of ales on tap and loads of friendly staff happy to help you about a solid menu of good grub (they famously have a pickles contest every November). Its pub quiz is decent to boot, full of loads of friendly locals going at it over Geography trivia.

GonnaNeedABoat

“You’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat”, Hackney & Brixton

When is it: third Tuesday of the month in Hackney, last Tuesday of the month in Brixton, 7.30pm start.

How much does it cost: £5 per person

How many people per team: No restrictions, but large teams will be split in half

You’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat is a huge projected pub quiz about about films. Running monthly and hosted in a number of locations in Hackney and Kentish Town, it’s definitely one for film buffs.
