Has this druglord’s son given away his whereabouts?

JOE

It seems even the most ruthless crime lords can be caught out by the most innocuous pieces of technology.

Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman has been described as “the most powerful drug trafficker in the world” by none other than the US treasury.

He has been on the run since escaping from a maximum security facility in July, but he may have found an unlikely foe in Twitter’s geolocation tool.

A tweet from Guzman’s son seems to place the 60-year-old in the small Mexican city of Costa Rica (rather than the Central American country), according to reports.

But it has been suggested that the post, in which El Chapo’s face is obscured by an image of a joke-shop disguise, may be a decoy.

Geolocation of a bodyguard’s Blackberry is thought to have helped capture Guzman in 2014, so those with knowledge of the situation have not ruled out the possibility that the druglord’s son is playing on this fact to throw authorities off the scent.
