Europe’s sexiest accents have been revealed, and it’s bad news for Brits

Just another thing to blame Brexit for.

We knew we were never going to be able to compete with French or the Italians.

And we’ll concede that we didn’t expect to come out above the Spanish either.

But when it came to ranking the sexiest accents in Europe, we though at least one of the myriad British accents would have at least turned on a few of our European counterparts.

We’re the land of Hugh Grant and random romcom love interests whose characters have pretty much nothing going on besides their British charm.

But lo and behold, according to data released by the global dating app Happn, no British accents crack the top ten of their European ranking.

The poll of 1,000 people showed that a quarter of people felt that Italian was the sexiest accent – who are we to argue? They did produce Andrea Pirlo after all.

Our neighbours across to the west, Ireland, find themselves in third with 19% of the vote behind the French whose 23% was enough to see them finish just behind Italy in second.

The Spanish was fourth on 16%, and then a big drop down to Sweden on 5%.

Perhaps they’re still bitter after Brexit, since the top ten was filled out by Russian, Portuguese, German, Dutch and Greek.

So in the end, not a sign of the English or Welsh, while the Northern Irish will presumably claim their part in the Irish accent result. The Scots don’t get a look in either, despite the Glaswegian accent being rated the sexiest British regional accent by Americans. Although they did also say that Geordies sound the smartest, so maybe they were just pulling our leg.
