Gone are the days where people gave their dogs traditional names like Spot, Rover or Lassie; these days, much like celebrities naming their kids, it often seems to be a contest to come up with the most ridiculous name possible.

Thankfully, as a survey by pet sitting service DogVacay about the most popular male and female dog names of 2016 shows, more run-of-the-mill titles still hold a lot of appeal.

Granted, the survey applied to owners of dogs in the US and Canada, but as dog names tend to be more universal than their human equivalents, many of you will no doubt be familiar with the names on both lists below.

Most of them, we think you’ll agree, are the dog’s bollo**s.
