Hillary Clinton opens up about her pain at Trump defeat in first public appearance since the election

Eight days on from learning she'd missed out on becoming the next US President, Hillary Clinton has broken her silence, expressing her disappointment at her defeat to Donald Trump.

In her first public appearance since Trump's triumph, Clinton gave a speech at a gala for the Children’s Defense Fund in which she laid bare her sadness at coming second to Trump. "I will admit coming here tonight wasn’t the easiest thing for me," she admitted.  "There have been a few times this past week when all I wanted to do was just to curl up with a good book or our dogs and never leave the house again." Despite this, she urged those in the audience to fight for American values, regardless of whether or not they were fully behind their soon-to-be president in the election campaigns. "I know many of you are deeply disappointed about the results of the election. I am too, more than I can ever express. "I know this isn't easy. I know that over the past week a lot of people have asked themselves whether America is the country we thought it was. "The divisions laid bare by this election run deep. But please listen to me when I say this: America is worth it, our children are worth it. Believe in our country, fight for our values and never, ever give up."
