We need to reorganise the fridge!

The majority of people keep their milk in the door of their fridge which allows them to stand the carton upright to prevent leaks. However, experts have now warned against doing this.

According to kitchen appliance manufacturer Beko, storing milk could shorten the life of our groceries.

The company has warned that poor fridge organisation could greatly impact the longevity of our food, especially milk.

Salah Sun, Head of Product Management at Beko said: "The way we organise our fridges can make or break our efforts to reduce food waste. Most people don't realise that poor fridge organisation isn't just about aesthetics – it directly impacts food longevity and your household budget.

"Temperature fluctuates within your fridge, so storing items in the right zones is crucial. The bottom shelf, being the coldest, is perfect for raw meats, while the middle shelves maintain ideal conditions for dairy and prepared foods. The door, often used for milk, is actually the warmest area due to frequent opening."

The company highlighted that by getting the organisation of our fridges right, we can prevent food and drinks going off.

They said: "We recommend keeping more stable items like condiments and drinks in the door compartments, moving milk to the middle shelf where temperatures remain more constant."

The company estimates that UK households typically throw away around £250 worth of food per person each year, equating to £1,000 for a family of four.

By reorganising your fridge you could increase the longevity of fresh produce and save yourself money over time.
