Dog carries 30 pound dumbbell around in its mouth as a toy

A clip posted to Reddit shows a dog using a 30lb dumbbell as a toy. Maybe lockdown home workouts aren't just for humans after all

Dogs are often referred to as man’s best fried. They are, apart from the occasionally shitty dogs, extremely loyal, affectionate and incredibly enjoyable to be around.

Our connection to the canine world is so strong that we often assign human emotions to them. In reality, they probably only love us because we feed them and scratch their backs.

But now, it would appear that dogs are more like us than we thought. That’s because one dog in particular is using his time on lockdown to get home workouts done.

In a clip posted to Reddit by the user @gallowboob, one cheeky Rottweiler decided to get in on the lockdown home workout vibe.

When it comes to selecting a favourite toy, dogs usually go for the obvious: soft toys, tennis balls and bones. Gym equipment isn’t normally high on that list, unless you’re this particular Rottweiler from the United States.

The dumbbell probably isn’t doing his teeth any favours, but it’s a pretty impressive level of strength. Neck is often a neglected area for most people to train, so this cheeky mutt is certainly doing something right in that regard.

If you are new to the gym, here is some help in picking the right workout plan for your goal.

Just how clever is your dog?

A 2009 study published by the American Psychological Association found that dogs generally have the intelligence of a two-year-old child.

According to psychologist and canine researcher Stanley Coren, dogs can also understand more than 150 words and intentionally deceive you to get treats.

“They are nearly as successful in deceiving humans as humans are in deceiving dogs,” Coren said.

“Their stunning flashes of brilliance and creativity are reminders that they may not be Einsteins but are sure closer to humans than we thought.”

Coren didn’t mention whether dogs were capable of following a consistent weight training programme. Either way, at least this little guy puts his dumbbells back once he’s finished.
