The Room’s Tommy Wiseau is making a Sharknado-style movie called Big Shark

Wil Jones

The Room + Sharknado = Greatest film ever, right?

There have been two key trends in cult ‘bad movie’ fandom over the last decade or so.

One is The Room, the endlessly fascinating independent drama written, directed by and starring genuine auteur Tommy Wiseau. Originally opening at just one cinema in LA, the wonderfully-incompetent film developed a word-of-mouth cult following, created hundreds of memes, and now plays to packed audiences the world over. The making of the film was even immortalised on-screen in 2017’s The Disaster Artist, with Wiseau being played by James Franco.

The other is, of course,  giant shark movies. The Sharknado series – which recently concluded with its sixth installment – is the undeniable headliner of the genre. But dive into the dregs of any DVD bargain bin or lower rungs of any streaming service, and you will find such key texts as 2 Headed Shark Attack, Ghost SharkSharktopus and Mega Shark Versus Mecha Shark.

Now, finally, those two worlds are coming together. Tommy Wiseau has revealed he making a shark attack movie, called Big Shark.

Wiseau unveiled a teaser for the movie, which is believed to be as-yet-unshot, at a Q and A in Germany, and a shaky cameraphone version of it has hit the internet.

The news was first reported by German site Film Flutter, who report:

The teaser starts off with Patrick, played by Tommy Wiseau, who introduces his friends Tim (Isaiah LaBorde) and Georgie (Greg Sestero) to two women at a restaurant. In the next scene one of the women calls Sestero’s character a jerk and both slap him. His buddies laugh at him and he laughs it off. In the following scene they are walking back to their car when they see water at their feet running through the streets. After a cut they are already up to their hips in the water and in the background a large badly animated shark consumes its victim. After that the shark goes for the trio and they try to run away. The title card comes on, after which the shot of the CG shark swimming towards the camera and snapping is repeated multiple times.

(Translation from Bloody Disgusting).

Greg Sestero, Wiseau’s co-star in The Room also added the film is apparently about three firemen who try to save the world from killer sharks.

Reportedly, the film is to shoot this year, with September premiere planned.
