Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange will be back to UK-wide cinemas from 5th April

A new trailer of Stanley Kubrick’s classic A Clockwork Orange has just been unveiled and the film will be re-launched to UK cinemas.

The original 1971 film, which was based on Anthony Burgess’s decline-of-civilisation novel, will be back in cinemas from 5 April.

Set in a flamboyantly stylised near-future, it tells the story of gangs of disenfranchised teenagers indulging in narcotic cocktails and revelling in acts of ‘ultraviolence’.

The film centres on Alex (Malcolm McDowell) and his band of droogs.

After it inspired a series of copycat crimes, the film was banned from 1973 until after Kubrick’s death in 1999.

Stuart Brown, BFI Head of Programme and Acquisitions, described him as “not just the greatest filmmaker but one of the greatest artists of the 20th century in any medium”.

“Kubrick’s ability to manoeuvre the machinery of Hollywood to enable a level of artistic control that had never been seen before allowed him to convey bold and complex ideas.

“This, coupled with his now infamously meticulous approach to the craft, produced an oeuvre that seems inexhaustibly rich in meaning and significance and u paralleled in terms of influence,” he added.

Along with the UK-wide re-release of A Clockwork Orange in April, the movie will also be presented during a two-month season at BFI Southbank from 1 April.

The Design Museum will also present its version of the German Film Museum’s ‘Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition’, which explores Kubrick’s life and work.
