Will Poulter had to look like the ‘perfect being’

Actor Will Poulter has opened up about the extreme body transformation he had to go through for his role in the next Guardians of the Galaxy film.

Poulter is set to star alongside Chris Pratt and co in the third installment in the Marvel film series, scheduled for release next year.

The 27-year-old will play Adam Warlock, an artificially created human who he describes as being “genetically engineered by scientists to be the perfect being.”

But for the role he had to go through an “unhealthy” and “unrealistic” training regime that he would not recommend to anyone.

Speaking to the Independent, the actor admitted that such an extreme body transformation can be detrimental and takes its toll on a person’s physical and mental health.

He said: “The most important thing is that your mental and physical health has to be number one, and the aesthetic goals have to be secondary, otherwise you end up promoting something that is unhealthy and unrealistic if you don’t have the financial backing of a studio paying for your meals and training.

“I’m in a very privileged position in that respect, and I wouldn’t recommend anyone do what I did to get ready for that job.”

Poulter went on to outline some of the details of his regime, explaining that he is now on the “maintenance phase” of the process. This means he is no longer “eating copious amounts of food to bulk” but he’s also “not cutting.”

He also revealed that he has not had any alcohol since New Year and that the “whole social side” of his life has had to “take a back seat.”

The likes of Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans have both had to undergo major bulking regimes for their roles as in the MCU as Thor and Captain America respectively.

And Chris Pratt, who plays Star Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, famously underwent a similar transformation for the first Guardians film, shedding more than 27kg (60lbs) in half a year for the role.

You’ll have to wait a while to see the results of Poulter’s efforts though, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 set to hit cinemas on May 5, 2023.
