Trevor Noah pays tribute to Jon Stewart in his first monologue for the Daily Show (video)

Graciously accepts the baton...

Stepping into the well-worn slippers of Jon Stewart was never going to be a comfortable transition.

When South African comedian Trevor Noah was announced as the new Daily Show host, the reaction was sceptical to say the least – but he’s hit the ground running for his first outing.

In his opening monologue on the late night satirical programme, Noah announced, “Growing up in the dusty streets of South Africa, I never dreamed I would one day have an indoor toilet and a job as host of the Daily Show, and now I have both and I’m quite comfortable with one of them.

“I can only assume this as strange for you as it is for me. Jon Stewart was more than just a late night host, he was often our voice, our refuge, and in many ways our political dad – and it’s weird because dad has left.

“And now it feels like the family has a new step-dad – and he’s black.”

Think we can agree he’s got off to a good start…
