Despite the fact that Tom Hardy is one of the biggest stars on the planet, there was a period when he was just a grunt. A grunt in the military to be more precise.
To many, it was Hardy’s performance as John A. Janovec in Band of Brothers that grabbed the world’s attention and the actor followed this up with a part in Ridley Scott’s gritty war epic Black Hawk Down.
The star of Dunkirk and Venom might be lacing up his boots yet again because Stefano Sollima is a big fan of Hardy’s work and the director has him in mind to play the leading role in the upcoming Call of Duty film.
After being asked to direct Sicario 2: Soldado, Sollima is definitely a man that’s in demand.
As reported by Variety, the Italian director is currently in negotiations to direct the COD film and he’s already thinking about his leading man.
When asked by The Metro about Hardy’s credentials for the leading role in Call of Duty, the director of Gomorrah and Suburra said: “I mean, I like almost everything [he’s been in]. I’m waiting for his Venom. Even in Mad Max, he was great.”
This being said, Sollima also has another candidate in mind for the role, Star Trek’s Chris Pine.
When asked about Pine’s skills as an actor, the director said: “He’s tough, but he’s smart and he can have a sense of humour but he can [also] be in such a dramatic role. I like when you feel that an actor can play with different nuances and tone because this means they’re a good actor.”
It’s worth mentioning that Sicario 2: Soldado is written by Taylor Sheridan – he wrote Hell or High Water which featured a superb performance from Pine – so that could sway things. Also, Sollima hasn’t been offered the gig just yet so any casting decisions are a bit premature.
Then again, the prospect of Tom Hardy in a COD film is very exciting.
As for the upcoming films that will feature these three men, Hardy will be seen in Venom, Pine stars in A Wrinkle in Time and Sollima’s sequel to Sicario is released on June 29th.
