Tom Felton got paid £14 million to appear in Harry Potter for 31 minutes

Felton made several grand every second

Tom Felton was pretty memorable as Draco Malfoy, but the most notable thing about the role might be just how much the actor banked for so little screen time.

Despite pitting himself as Harry Potter’s worst classroom foe, the character clocked up just 31 minutes and 45 seconds of screen time. And that’s across all eight movies.

When compared to his Harry Potter cast mates, Felton wasn’t hardly there. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson or Rupert Grint, spent 539 minutes, 205 minutes and 211 minutes, respectively on screen.

Draco featured even less than Hagrid, who beat him by almost 15 minutes. Hagird racked up 45 minutes and 45 seconds. The Dark Lord clocked in at 37 minutes and 15 seconds.

Yet, despite featuring in less than three percent of the overall series, Felton got £14 million. If you break it down by minute, that’s £451,613 ever sixty seconds. More than $7500 a second.

The actor was just 13-years-old when Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone began filming, so not surprisingly, he didn’t make particularly shrewd investments.

According to the Express, Felton previously told The Daily Mail that he spent much of his money on “typical teenage stuff”.

“I bought a lot of rubbish things that kids buy: skateboards and clothes and typical teenage stuff. And, as soon as I could, I wasted a lot of money on cars – BMWs mostly – for myself and my family,” he explained.

“My mum told me: ‘You have worked hard for it so get what you want, but beware, you will lose money on cars’. And she was right.”

Felton reportedly ended up getting in trouble with the taxman after splashing the cash, and at one point even had “the bailiff at the door”.
