Some people say that the best part of a big footballing tournament is all the football, but they’re wrong.
Don’t get us wrong, we love watching the best players in the world (or in this year’s case, Europe) face off against each other during a month-long frenzy of non-stop action.
But today’s tournaments are lacking in something the 90s had in abundance – and we’re not just talking about the distinct absence of Baggio brothers in the modern game.
Back when the Premier League was still in its infancy and everyone in football was still trying to figure out this whole ‘marketing’ thing, players for the qualifying teams would get us pumped up for every major tournament with a new cheesy pop song.
While there have been some recent attempts, that tradition appears to have been killed by Ant and Dec’s ‘On the Ball’ disaster of 2002.
But some fans are trying to revive it, as they have launched a petition asking New Order to once again team up with John Barnes and Keith Allen to perform their 1990 World Cup song ‘World in Motion’ at this year’s Glastonbury festival.
The petition, which at the time of writing has yet to break 500 signatures, reads: ‘It’s Euro 2016 this year. England genuinely have a decent squad (debatable). We could win the trophy (also debatable).
‘But nevertheless, for the punters in the mud at Glastonbury this year, surely it’ll be brilliant if John Barnes and Keith Allen came on stage to perform with New Order for the Three Lions anthem ‘World in Motion’. Let’s make this happen. Should England qualify from the group stage, the performance would go down a storm.’
Glastonbury kicks off on June 22 this year – two days after England’s final group game against Slovakia, with the round of 16 ties taking place on the weekend of the festival.
If they managed to get the Lightning Seeds to perform ‘Three Lions’ in 2010, surely this is achievable too.
