The Oscar nominations have been revealed

Paul Moore

After winning the Golden Globe for Best motion picture (drama), Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the front-runner in the Oscar race but it has competition.

Martin McDonagh’s film has been nominated alongside Call Me By Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, The Post, and The Shape of Water.

In terms of the Best Director category, Christopher Nolan, Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, Paul Thomas Anderson and Guillermo Del Toro are competing for that top gong. Surprisingly, there’s no nod for McDonagh’s superb work on Three Billboards.

The superb performances from Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell in Three Billboards have also been acknowledged in the best supporting actor category.

Gary Oldman is the bookies’ favourite to finally land the Best Actor award and his performance as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour has been nominated. The British actor will be competing against Timothee Chalamet, Daniel Day-Lewis, Daniel Kaluuya and Denzel Washington.

In terms of the Best Actress category, it appears that it’s going to be a straight shoot-out between Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) and Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird). Sally Hawkins, Margot Robbie, and Meryl Streep are also in contention.

On the technical side of things, Blade Runner received a heap of nods as did Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It’s also very cool to see Edgar Wright’s heist caper Baby Driver and Logan pick up a few nominations.

Here are the nominations in full.
