Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 3 June) is The House of the Devil, the supremely creepy 2009 horror from writer-director Ti West (X, Pearl, MaXXXine).
The film stars Jocelin Donahue (The Last Stop at Yuma County) as Samantha, a cash-strapped young college student in the '80s who accepts a mysterious babysitting job.
Showing up at a remote mansion for the gig, Samantha learns from the Ulmans (Mary Woronov and Tom Noonan) - the couple living there - that instead of a child, she will be looking after an elderly relative.
As the college student is left alone in the isolated house, a series of strange events occur.
The breakthrough movie of cult horror director West and also featuring an early onscreen turn by Greta Gerwig (Barbie, Frances Ha) as Samantha's best friend, The House of the Devil starts slow before gradually ratcheting up the tension, eventually escalating to a truly nail-biting finale.
The film also looks incredible, with West shooting it on retro equipment and deploying cinematic flourishes more popular in the ’70s and ’80s in order to better capture the vibe of the era.
Holding an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes, The House of the Devil is available to stream on Prime Video, Shudder, Tubi and Plex.
But it is also airing on TV tonight on the channel Legend Xtra at 10.55pm.
