One of the biggest horror hits of recent years has just been added to Prime Video

Great news for those looking to watch something spooky

One of the biggest success stories over the past decade in cinema has been that of The Conjuring Universe created by filmmaker James Wan. The first movie in the franchise - The Conjuring - was released in 2013 and followed two married paranormal investigators (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) in the '70s as they worked to help a family terrorised by a dark presence in their farmhouse. Earning rave reviews - an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes - and grossing nearly $320 million at the box office on a $20 million budget, the film inspired a number of hit spin-offs including the Annabelle trilogy, as well as The Curse of La Llorona and The Nun. Meanwhile, Farmiga and Wilson reprised their roles in two direct sequels to The Conjuring - 2016's The Conjuring 2 and  2021's The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the latter of which has just been added to Prime Video. Inspired by true events, the plot synopsis for the movie states: "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It reveals a chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Wilson and Farmiga). One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they'd ever seen before, to mark the first time in US history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense." Directed by Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona), The Devil Made Me Do It managed to gross over $205 million at the box office on a $39 million budget despite being released amid the Covid-19 pandemic. And though the sequel was not as acclaimed by critics as the other The Conjuring movies, some reviewers had kind words for the movie as evidenced below: ABC News: "The third and weakest chapter in The Conjuring series messes with the facts about a real-life case of demonic possession as a legal defense, but Farmiga and Wilson as married demonologists know how to marshall nerve-rattling chills." Bloody Disgusting: "Chaves takes the reins from Wan and runs with it, bringing a wholly different experience that still feels like a warm reunion with horror's favorite couple." Newsday: "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It adds a little twist just to keep things fresh, telling a supernatural tale with the methodical approach of a police procedural." Rolling Stone: "The terror of losing oneself to a demon or, in the case of Lorraine Warren, to a psychic reconstruction of such a possession, is worthy of all the rattles the film inspires." The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is available to stream on Prime Video now in the UK and Ireland.
