Millions of people sat down to watch the show’s last ever episode on Christmas night.
Fans of Gavin and Stacey took to social media just minutes after last night’s finale, and many of them had the same thing to say.
Seventeen years after the much-loved comedy’s first episode aired, the end of an era came in the form of a one hour and thirty minute special at 9pm on Christmas Day.
It had been five years since the last Gavin & Stacey Christmas special aired back in 2019, and the big question everybody wanted an answer to was whether Smithy said yes when Nessa proposed to him at the very end of that episode.
While fans got an answer to that particular cliffhanger, they failed to get the full story behind the show’s longest running joke: ‘What happened between Bryn and Jason on the fishing trip?’
That question has been at the centre of all fan speculation throughout the years, even though the fishing trip itself took place outside of the timeline of the series.
The first clips from the final episode of the hugely popular sitcom, which were shown during the Strictly Come Dancing finale, appeared to tease a revelation about the trip. But that did not happen.
In true Gavin and Stacey, just as the truth was about to be revealed, an oven alarm stepped in and ruined the big reveal.
Loads of people took to X to react to the excruciating scene, with some expressing their frustration at not finding out and others applauding the show runners for maintaining the secret right until the very end.
One person wrote: “They managed to end it so well that nobody’s bothered about the fishing trip cos we’re all too busy sobbing.”
Another commented: “Loved the final episode of Gavin and Stacy, and what a perfect way to end a great TV show. Gutted it’s the last one, but right ending.”
One other user added: “9.9/10 finale, wonderful stuff. Anyone who wanted to know what happened on the fishing trip just doesn’t get it!”

Robert Wilfort, who plays Jason in the show, spoke about the lack of closure surrounding the fishing trip story while at a screening of the episode in London.
“I’d like to say now and forever, the joke has always been you don’t find out,” he revealed. “I’m sorry everybody, but that has always been the joke and it always will be because it’s funny.”
He continued: “It’s funnier that way. And I was so pleased that we didn’t reveal it because we never know what it is.”
