Talks are already underway for Star Wars the TV series

The Force...could be on telly

Tune in every week we would.

The success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens as one of the highest grossing movies of all time proved that a whole new generation were more than willing embrace the magical sci-fi world originally created by George Lucas. And this year’s much-awaited Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set to expand the universe even further.

There may be further spin-off cinema releases in the pipeline, with at least one Han Solo prequel in pre-production, starring Hail Caesar! star Alden Ehrenreich. Plus of course there’s the continuation of the main saga, following the adventures of Rey, Finn and co. But what no one expected was Star Wars coming to the small screen.

Other sci-fi franchises have managed a parallel TV/film existence, most notably Star Trek, but thus far the only television versions of the Jedi story have come in the shape of animated series’ Star Wars Rebels and Clone Wars. Now Channing Dungey, ABC Entertainment president, has admitted that talks are already underway for a live-action show.

“As a fan, I would absolutely love to it,” explained Dungey to Deadline during a panel discussion for the Television Critics Association. “We have already had conversations, and we will continue to have conversations with Lucasfilm…It would be wonderful to extend the franchise.”

She went on to explain: “I think that we’ve moved into a landscape where there is a real appetite for serialised dramas…in this binging culture, there’s something about serialised dramas that really compels people.”

We’d certainly be compelled with a Star Wars TV series, Channing, don’t you worry.
