Street Fighter to Shoryuken the hell out of the small screen with a new TV show

Can they finally do it justice?

Iconic beat 'em up franchise Street Fighter is set to battle for entertainment supremacy once again with the news that a new TV show is in development based on the classic game. Deadline reports that Entertainment One will bring the new series to life, with the team behind live-action web series Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist on board as executive producers. The new show will take its cue from the 'World Warrior' story arc first seen in 1991's Street Fighter II, with Ryu, Ken, Guile and Chun-Li acting as the four key characters. They'll eventually reel off combos against Shadaloo mastermind M. Bison and his various henchmen, so expect the likes of Sagat and Vega to pop up here and there, too. “Street Fighter is a global tour de force franchise, having garnered immense worldwide commercial success and built a vast devoted fanbase that has only grown through its 30-year legacy,” said Entertainment One President Mark Gordon. “A particular strength of Street Fighter is the wide range of ethnically diverse characters and powerful women featured in the game. It will allow us to build an inclusive and engaging TV universe," he added. It won't be the first time Street Fighter has crescent-kicked its way from the gaming world to your TV screen, of course. The 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme-starring movie is its own incredible tale of Hollywood excess and poor decisions, with the story behind it all seriously worth taking the time to read up on. Still, even that effort isn't quite as shocking as 2009's horrendous Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, which brought further shame to the series.
