American retailer Fandango said JJ Abrams’ film sold more than eight times as many tickets on its first day of release as the previous record holder, 2012’s The Hunger Games.
Avatar, which debuted in 2009, currently holds the global box office record with $2.787bn. But judging by the frenzy for pre-sales, the Force Awakens is predicted to steal the crown from James Cameron's blockbuster.
