It's a great time to revisit the modern classic.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 24 June) is Shallow Grave, the brilliantly tense and twisty thriller that was the feature debut of future Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, the now in cinemas 28 Years Later).

Set in Edinburgh, the 1994 film centres around a trio of friends and roommates: accountant David (Christopher Eccleston), doctor Juliet (Kerry Fox) and journalist Alex (Ewan McGregor). They are searching for a fourth roommate for their trendy flat and wind up settling on the aloof and mysterious Hugo (Keith Allen).

However, not long after this, the trio discovers their new roommate dead in his bedroom from a drug overdose. Lying beside the body also is a large sum of cash.

"After some deliberation, the three others decide to keep the money and to dismember and bury Hugo's body," the plot synopsis adds.

"Soon, each roommate starts thinking about keeping all the money by scamming the others."

Shallow Grave was written by Boyle's recurring collaborator John Hodge (Trainspotting) and also features amongst its cast Ken Stott and Peter Mullan.

Thanks to its clever and deliciously dark screenplay, Boyle's trademark kinetic direction and the brilliant lead performances, the movie was a big hit upon release both at the box office and with critics.

In fact, it even went on to win the BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film.

Not only does Shallow Grave feature many of the cast and crew who went on to work on Trainspotting, the 1994 thriller is back in the news as Boyle is earning rave reviews for his latest movie, 28 Years Later.

Shallow Grave is airing on TV tonight/tomorrow morning on Film4 at 1.35am. If you can't record it, however, it's also currently streaming on Channel 4's website.
