Season 5 of Luther is so dark that it gave the cast nightmares

Paul Moore

Every Luther fan is pumped for this

Granted, Buddy the Elf and Kevin McCallister are all excellent at spreading some Christmas cheer over the holiday season, but what about the antithesis of this?

You know what we mean. For every Santa there’s The Grinch. John McClane has to square off against Hans Gruber. Yin and yang.

After all, we can’t always be happy all of time but we can be damned entertained!

On that note, Season 5 of Luther will be airing on New Year’s Day on BBC One as Idris Elba dons the famous coat once again.

With news that the film is currently in the works, new cast member Wunmi Mosaku has said that the new Season is going to be an absolute treat for anyone that loves the macabre mystery.

In an interview with Metro, she said that the plot is so dark that it gave her nightmares.

“I really struggled. I had nightmares! It is pretty dark. From reading the script I had “Oh god” moments. Reading the scripts does send tingles I think. ‘Interestingly it wasn’t hard to film. The dead bodies aren’t real dead bodies because they start talking to you after we shout “cut”. ‘But just the imagery is hard to get rid of. It wasn’t actually scary on set,” said Mosaku.

As for the plot, the official synopsis reads as such: “The moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare. DCI John Luther must once again confront the depths of human depravity. As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror.

“But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther must also face the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect… and who to sacrifice. Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him – and will change John Luther forever.”

Having hunted serial killers, murders, kidnappers, disgruntled soldiers, anarchists, vigilantes, and some of the most twisted minds around, we can only imagine what new foe DCI John Luther will be facing next.

Bring it on.
