Eminem said hip hop had lost ‘one of the best battlers of all time’

Battle rapper Pat Stay has died after being stabbed during the early hours of Sunday morning in Nova Scotia, Canada. He was 36.

Police have said Stay was the victim of a fatal stabbing that took place in the early hours of the morning, but few others details have emerged.

Officers were called out to Lower Water Street in Halifax just after 12.30am.

Stay was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead, CBC reports.

Halifax Regional Police say an autopsy determined Stay was the victim of a homicide.

Constable John MacLeod told CBS police did not have any information about what led to the stabbing or whether there were any witnesses. Police are urging anyone with any information to come forward.

Rappers, including Eminem, have paid tribute to Stay.

Posting on Twitter, a fan said: “Pat Stay was also a beautiful poet. So much more than just a Battle Rapper. An amazing musician, incredible actor, hilarious comedian. There will never be another.”

Another wrote: “The collective hearts of the battle rap community is broken today. The guy EVERYBODY loved is no longer with us. Pray for his children and his family at this difficult time. Long Live Pat Stay.”

A third said: “Probably the saddest day in the battle rap culture ever. RIP to the Canadian Legend, Giant, Goat. Pat Stay. Praying for his family, loved ones, friends and fans.”

Another wrote on YouTube: “RIP Pat Stay the GOAT, thanks for the endless hours of entertainment you have given me/us!!”

Stay was a well-established battle rapper and just two days before his death released a track featuring Kaleb Simmonds – titled The Game DISS. It has already clocked up more than a quarter of a million views.

The song was in response to The Game’s criticism of fellow rapper Eminem in his track ‘The Black Slim Shady’. Stay had challenged The Game to a rap battle, but was blocked instead.

Sharing his song, Stay wrote: “I’ve had this in the chamber for a good minute now ready to fire if Game got brave. Clearly he don’t want smoke. But this goes too hard to keep from y’all so here it is.”

He added: “Oh, and Game (can’t tag you since you blocked me lol)… I stepped into your world so wassup? It’s all love for the sport, right?!? Let’s see if you’re really bout this rap s**t.”

The Game DISS video includes a brief quote from Canadian rapper Drake, who praises Stay as “definitely one of, if not, the best”.

Following Stay’s death, a GoFundMe page has been set up to support his heartbroken family. At of midday on Monday, almost $79,000 (£68K) has been donated.

A note on the page reads: “We are setting up this fund to help raise money for our fallen brothers family. He has been taken from the world far too soon and many will be devastated forever.

“Pat Stay was a very honourable man who was on his way to a bright future. Our heart hurts for his family and friends at this time so we hope to help ease some of the pain by ensuring his family has help through this process. Prayers to the King #PatStay.”
