It’s one of the best movies of the decade so far.
Nicolas Cage made headlines last December with the news that he is considering retiring from movies.
During an interview to promote his acclaimed recent comedy fantasy Dream Scenario, he told Uproxx that he is contracted to appear in three or four more films but added:
“I feel I’ve pretty much said what I’ve had to say with cinema. And I’d like to leave on a high note and say: ‘Adios.'”
This would be a crying shame as the Oscar-winner has done some of his best work in recent years. A perfect example of this is 2021’s drama thriller Pig, which is airing on TV tonight (Wednesday, September 25).
Cage stars in the movie as Rob, a former chef living a reclusive existence deep in the Oregon wilderness who supports himself by foraging for truffles with the help of his beloved pig.
One night, however, Rob is attacked by assailants who steal the animal – leading the recluse to return to the city he once called home in an effort to get the pig back.
What begins as essentially “John Wick but with a pig instead of a dog” quickly evolves into a haunting but beautiful meditation on love, grief and regrets as we learn more about Rob’s past as he embarks on this odyssey to retrieve the animal.
The film also sees Cage give one of his very best performances as this intense, quiet man who you never doubt has this incredible well of emotions lurking just beneath his tough exterior.
And if you don’t believe us, Pig holds a near-perfect 97% Rotten Tomatoes score – making it Cage’s second highest rated movie on the website.
The film is airing on Film4 tonight at 11.20pm. It is also available to rent on Apple TV, Curzon, Rakuten TV and Volta.
Here are the other movies airing on TV tonight:
Deadpool 2 – Film4 – 9pm
Ryan Reynolds’ ‘merc with a mouth’ returns in this superhero sequel.
Braven – Legend – 9pm
In this well-reviewed action thriller, a logger (Jason Momoa) and his father (Stephen Lang) on a trip to their hunting cabin find themselves fighting for survival when they encounter a gang of ruthless drug traffickers.
Red Rock West – Legend – 10.55pm
This ’90s neo-noir thriller in which Nicolas Cage plays a drifter mistaken for a hitman is actually the actor’s highest rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes with a 98% score.
Dog Eat Dog – Legend Xtra – 10.55pm
