The beloved direwolf Ghost will appear in Game of Thrones Season 8

Paul Moore

Jon Snow’s beloved companion is back

It’s fitting that Game of Thrones has managed to tap into one of the strangest facets of the human brain.

Over the course of the seven seasons, we’ve seen all of the following occur; a little girl being burned alive (Princess Shireen), a pregnant women that was stabbed in the stomach (Talisa Stark), a child being hanged (Oli, but that little shit deserved it) and hundreds of other deaths, but one thing that people cant stand to see is the direwolves being hurt.

In a rare moment of hope, we saw that Nymeria (Arya’s direwolf) is alive and well, but fans of the show were also hoping that Ghost – the runt of the litter – would make an appearance alongside the King in the North. In fact, fans even started a fundraising campaign to raise additional money to support the VFX work that’s required to create the beloved animal.

As stated previously, we’re massive fans of Jon Snow’s trusted companion because when the going gets tough, the direwolf is consistently there to fight alongside his master.

On that note, we’ve got some good news because that famous white fur is going to be prominent in Season 8. Visual effects supervisor Joe Bauer told Huffington Post in a recent interview that Jon Snow‘s red-eyed direwolf will have a key role in the wars to come.

“Oh, you’ll see him again. He has a fair amount of screen time in Season 8. He does show up. … he’s very present and does some pretty cool things,” Bauer said.

With regards to Ghost’s absence in Season 7, we were already told that there was a scene featuring the direwolf in the original script but it wasn’t filmed due to budgeting concerns.

Bauer elaborated on that point during the interview too.

“The direwolves are tough because you don’t want to get them wrong, so we end up always shooting real wolves and doing a scaling trick with them, but the real wolves only behave in certain ways. I think that has something to do with why the direwolves are in the show but they’re not maybe as integral as they are in the books,” he said.

FYI, if the Night King tries to lance ghost with a spear like he did to Viserion, we’re going to riot.
