Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 4 March) is No Other Land, the 2024 film which won the Best Documentary award at the Oscars this week.
The documentary follows Palestinian activist Basel Adra as he films his community of Masafer Yatta for half a decade being destroyed by Israel’s occupation.
This is as he builds an unlikely alliance with a journalist from the other side who joins his fight.
Made by a Palestinian-Israeli collective of four activists, No Other Land has been lauded by critics and currently holds a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score based on 90 reviews.
That said, despite being hailed by reviewers as "audacious", "eye-opening", "humane", "moving", "urgent" and as being "essential viewing", the documentary has struggled to find a distributor in the United States - something which its filmmakers have dubbed "completely political".
Speaking to Variety, the film's Israeli co-director Yuval Abraham said: "We’re obviously talking about the Israeli military occupation of the West Bank, and it’s very ugly. The film is very, very critical of Israeli policies.
"As an Israeli I think that’s a really good thing, because we need to be critical of these policies so they can change.
"But I think the conversation in the United States appears to be far less nuanced — there is much less space for this kind of criticism, even when it comes in the form of a film."
Even without US distribution, No Other Land won an Oscar for Best Documentary this week, and you can watch its filmmakers' powerful acceptance speeches below:
