Netflix has just added the third season of its acclaimed comedy show Girls5eva to its service.
Its great premise follows four women (Busy Philipps, Paula Pell, Sara Bareilles and Renée Elise Goldsberry) who were part of a girl group named Girls5eva, which was briefly popular around the year 2000 before fading into one-hit-wonder status.
Now, unfulfilled in their various lives and after having a hit single sampled by a young rapper, they reunite to try to find musical success again.
Created by Meredith Scardino (a writer on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and executively produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock (30 Rock), Girls5eva initially premiered on Peacock in the States in 2021 to rave reviews.
In fact, its first two seasons scored a combined very impressive 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite this acclaim though, it never seemed to find its right audience at Peacock, who ultimately decided to cancel the show when its second season ended.
In a bit of a shock takeover, however, Netflix swooped in to buy the rights to the series and move forward with a third season, which has just dropped in its entirety on the streaming giant and comprises of six episodes.
While reviews for the latest Girls5eva season are scarce since it just premiered, you can read a sample of some of the positive reviews the show’s first season received below:
Autostraddle: “The best part of Girls5Eva is I know when I watch it again, there will be jokes I missed. It’s that fast and clever.”
Globe and Mail: “In this series, the jokes are flowing so fast you might miss the poignancy that smoulders beneath it. Come for the jokes and stay for the little moments of piquancy. Highly recommended.”
New York: “Girls5eva is spawned from the Fey model: accessibly absurdist, riddled with clever zingers, thick with critique.”
Thrillist: “Girls5eva just works. It’s packed with brilliant, multilayered jokes; truly funny parody songs; and performances that rival the best on air.”
Girls5eva’s three seasons are streaming on Netflix right now.
