It's a good day for fans of the action-thriller franchise Jason Bourne.
A sixth film is in the works at Universal, with Matt Damon expected to return in the titular role.
Currently, there have been five films in the franchise, four of which starred Damon.
In total, the five films have earned over $1.6 billion at the box office.
Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass reunited for 2016's Jason Bourne, the most recent in the franchise.
The pair had worked together on the original trilogy, which concluded with 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum.
Both Damon and Greengrass stepped away from the the franchise for the fourth instalment; The Bourne Legacy in 2012.
That spin-off sequel with Jeremy Renner’s black ops agent Aaron Cross.
According to new reports, All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger is in talks to helm Bourne 6.
With a director in place, now all Universal need is their leading man.
Insiders claim that Damon will be asked first to return to the role when a script is written.
A source told American media outlet Deadline:
“As always, everything has to be executed perfectly for Damon to even consider coming back to the franchise, and that starts with a great script and story.
So as of right now no commitment from him until all of that is in place.”
Only time will tell if we will see Damon, 53, return to one of his most iconic roles.
