Netflix viewers are ecstatic as 1995 Sandra Bullock film is finally added to streaming service

Perfect Saturday night viewing

We’re living through a weird period for film and television, where it can often feel like nothing original is being made. Every trailer seems like it is simply for another sequel, spin-off or the next instalment in the never-ending and forever expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There was a time when this wasn’t the case though, and if it’s originality you’re after then Netflix may have the answer for you this weekend, after a high-concept 90s flick starring the iconic Sandra Bullock was added to its library.

The Net was released in 1995 and was directed by Irwin Winkler. It follows the story of a computer programmer named Angela Bennett (Sandra Bullock), who starts a new freelance gig before all her colleagues start dying.

She starts to become suspicious about a mysterious disc she has been given and her suspicions are raised even further when, during a trip to Mexico, she’s seduced by a handsome stranger (Jeremy Northam) intent on locating the same disc.

Mysterious deaths? Sandra Bullock? A handsome stranger? I know this is ticking a lot of boxes for some of you.

“Soon Angela is tangled up in a far-reaching conspiracy that leads to her identity being erased,” the official synopsis reads.

“Can she stop the same thing from happening to her life?”

Many have been reacting with joy on Twitter after discovering that the film is now on Netflix, and they’re clearly not the only ones, with currently sitting in Netflix UK’s top 10.

One user joked that the 90s flick is the reason so many people chose to work in tech roles. They said: “The Net with Sandra Bullock in today’s top 10 of Netflix movies because it’s the secret reason so many of us ended up working in digital, prove me wrong.”

A second said the film had given them an “incredible high,” with a third loving the 90s throwback vibes of the movie.

While another already had their evening plans firmly set in place: “Netflix is telling me that The Net (yes that one) is currently #5 in films today.

“This pleases me. I should bask in the height of tech fantasy by ordering a pizza online and joining the masses.”

So if your diary is still a bit empty this evening, then why not take a trip back to the time of floppy discs, and bask in a warm 90s glow with Sandra Bullock.
