Netflix have ordered a new multi-part documentary about the life of Prince

The doc is to be helmed by Selma and A Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVernay, who will work with the late musician’s estate to access his infamous archives.

DuVernay has previously worked with Netflix on the prison documentary 13th.

“Prince was a genius, a joy and a jolt to the senses,” the director said.

“He was like no other. He shattered preconceived notions, smashed boundaries, and shared his heart through his music. The only way I know how to make this film is with love and great care. I’m honored to do so and grateful.”

According to Variety, Prince’s estate are giving DuVernay access to “interviews, archival footage, photos and archive access.”

The documentary will cover the influential musician’s whole life, from his birth in Minneapolis, Minnesota, developing his interest and skills as a musician, going on to conquer the world, up to his death in 2016.

Before the Prince documentary, DuVernay has another project with Netflix coming, a series on The Central Park Five, concerning the wrongful conviction of five teenagers for the rape of a woman in New York.
