Max and Paddy could be set for a big return

Paddy McGuinness says two Christmas specials have already been written

Popular comedy series Max and Paddy’s Road to Nowhere could be set for a big return – almost 20 years after it first aired on TV.

The iconic show, which starred Peter Kay and Paddy McGuinness, documented the life of two Phoenix Club bouncers who escaped the world of clubbing and took to the open road in their prized motor home.

They find themselves in some sticky situations on their travels, at one point having to camp out in the woods overnight after getting lost nearby a motorway service station.

The pair also had a stint in prison and enjoyed a night out in the capital celebrating Kevin ‘The Wolfster’ Wolfson’s birthday.

Speaking to Roman Kemp on Capital Breakfast, McGuinness teased a possible return of the series.

He said: “We do talk about it…we never say never.”

McGuinness also revealed that they have penned “a couple of Christmas specials and we still got them” but doesn’t want to release them yet as he’s “inherently lazy” and likes “doing as little as possible for as much money as possible”.

Sian Welby pressed him on the issue because Capital Evening presenter Sonny Jay and Roman have obsessed over the issue for years.

“They sing the theme tune all the time”, she said, as the presenters broke out into tune live on air.

McGuinness said: “I core wrote that song as well. Just putting it out there. Just in case there’s a royalty thing ever comes round.”

He continued: “We were like talking about theme tune… “what should we do?”, “should we get in?” and we’ll “just do it now”. Bit of paper on your knee… he wrote a couple of lines, I wrote a couple lines and then we start putting it together and it is what it is. It goes on for a while that, like the 12 inch version… its mental. There’s all sorts of stuff in it.”

Asked if he’ll ever reunite with Kay to film new versions of the show, McGuinness said:

“Well, when we talk about stuff, the like the interesting thing about Max and Paddy, and Phoenix Nights is now, we are kind of all of an age of the people we played back then.

“But we do talk about it and what have you, but, I don’t, I can’t, I can’t see it at the minute, but we never say never, but it’s good to talk. Like Max and Paddy for instance, we wrote a couple of Christmas specials, and we still got them. And we never got around to doing on for whatever the reason were back in the day.

“But we’ve actually got them!”
