Some suggested there should be a minimum age for people to be on the show

Love Island sparked debate on Monday night over the age gap between Michael Owen’s daughter Gemma and fellow islander Davide.

Gemma Owen, 19, has been one of the most high-profile contestants on the show due to her famous father, and as the 2022 series of the the dating show got underway last night she was coupled up with 22-year-old Liam Llewellyn.

But in a twist, Davide Sanclimenti, 27, was later added to the villa lineup.

Viewers then saw the islanders play a game of dares, and when Gemma was told to kiss the islander she fancied the most, she had no doubt in her mind, making a move straight towards Davide.

Gemma and Davide locked lips in the opening episode, but the eight-year-age gap between the pair unsettled some viewers (ITV)

But for some, this didn’t sit well due to the age gap between the pair. Several took to Twitter, threatening to complain to the broadcast regulator Ofcom about the show.

One viewer wrote: “If Gemma and Davide end up together the Ofcom complaints are gunna be WILD it’s just so wrong.”

Another said: “If Davide even chats to Gemma I’m calling ofcom and the police.”

A third added: “I’m sorry but how old is Davide, because if he’s over 25 and he ends up with Gemma, I’m definitely complaining with OFCOM.”

Other viewers suggested that Gemma shouldn’t even be on the show in the first place, and that there should be an age limit.

At 19-year-old, she is the youngest contestant on this year’s series.

One viewer wrote: “Love island should be 21+ tbh, what business does a 19 year old have kissing a 27 year old ???”

Someone else tweeted: “The minimum age for Love island should be 21+ 19 is wayyyy too young.”

Another viewer said: “No man in his late 20s has anything in common with a freshly turned 19 year old btw.”
