Louis is back.
After making My Scientology Movie, Louis Theroux is back on familiar ground this evening as his new trilogy of documentaries begins on BBC2.
In the Dark States series, the talented broadcaster will examine three under-covered, yet incredibly important, aspects of current American life.
We’re told that every episode will “explore American cities that face uniquely devastating challenges” and the first documentary will focus on opiate and heroin addiction in Huntington, West Virginia.
While filming the documentary, Theroux embeds himself in an Appalachian community that’s being devastated and stretched to its limits by widespread heroin use.
The BBC have released a small snippet of what’s in store and it’s incredibly harrowing.
In the footage, we meet Katillia – a 25-year-old heroin addict that has no issue ‘shooting up’ while the camera is rolling.
Given Theroux’s empathy and skill as an interviewer, we learn that Katillia has previously prostituted herself for drugs money and that she used her first opiate at the age of 17.
Moments later, we see Katillia stating that her boyfriend is abusive towards her and that “her early promise has been taken over by a litany of crimes.”
Theroux will follow Heroin Town with Murder In Milwaukee and Sex Trafficking Houston.
