October 10: mark it in your calendars.
That’s the general release date for masterful documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux’s My Scientology Movie, which comes months after the film acquired UK distribution.
A spokesperson for Theroux made the announcement via his official Facebook page, detailing that Australian cinemas are screening the movie right now for a limited time. We have to wait a bit longer, but those lucky enough to nab a ticket can see it on October 7 in selected cinemas, where it will be preceded by a Nationwide live broadcast Q&A with Theroux himself and lifelong friend Adam Buxton. On October 10 it will arrive in cinemas everywhere.
The movie was previously screened at last year’s London Film Festival and at the Tribeca Film Festival in April.
The Facebook post also included a brand new trailer, which shows Theroux at his probing and persistent best. Scientology is a notoriously secretive religion, and the 46-year-old broadcaster looks to have faced one of his trickiest assignments to date as he tried to find out exactly what it is that entices people to join.
It’s pretty clear from just this brief clip that the film is going to be hilarious and slightly terrifying in equal measure. We genuinely cannot wait.
