Lots of people want the best character in Derry Girls to get a spin-off

Paul Moore

In a wonderful debut season, she stole the show.

We’re all still recovering from that stunning finale to Derry Girls but with a second season coming, let’s focus on just how brilliant those six episodes are. Much like any melancholic moment when a great season ends, it’s natural for viewers to wander back to the beginning.

Since debuting in January, the show has garnered a loyal fanbase and everybody has their own favourite moment when they fell in love with Derry Girls.

Like every episode, the very first one was brimming with one-liners like “Look, I wanted to be an individual but my ma wouldn’t let me,” and “I don’t smoke either, I just like meltin’ stuff” are just some of the standouts.

All this without mentioning Kamal, the wee African lad from Ballybofey.

This being said, the show really cemented its status when Sister Michael appeared on the screen and delivered some put-downs for the ages.

After Clare grasses on her mates, Sister Michael refuses to get angry and just replies by saying “I think it’s safe to say that we all lost a bit of respect for you there Clare.” Moments later, she delivered a harsh truth to Orla by saying “Yeah, you might want to think about wising up.”

Since then, her dry, withering and sardonic approach to teaching has been a revelation. Granted, choosing our favourite Derry girl (and boy) has been a tough choice because they all bring something unique to the show.

Orla says whatever comes in her head and is completely away with the fairies. Michelle just couldn’t give a shit and usually gets everyone into trouble. Clare is effortlessly charming as her nerves, conscience, and inability to withstand even the smallest bit of pressure ties her up in knots. Erin does her best to lead the group but she’s just as clueless as the rest of them. As for James, well, he’s the voice of reason…it’s just a shame that none of the girls actually listen to him.

When the gang gets together, they’re like an affable tornado of destruction but Sister Michael just couldn’t be bothered. While the Derry girls think they’re the best thing to ever grace Foyleside, Sister Michael can put them back in their place with one withering look and remark.

While she might seem to be distant and sarcastic, that little half-smile that she gave the girls as they helped Orla during her ‘step aerobics’ routine is enough proof that she still cares…she’s just brilliant at not showing it!

Long may that continue.

We’re excited to see what Season 2 has in store, but if a Sister Michael spin-off is in the works, we won’t say no.
