Our TV movie pick for tonight (Friday, 20 June) is Law Abiding Citizen, the 2009 vigilante action thriller.
The film stars Gerard Butler (How to Train Your Dragon) as Clyde Shelton, a loving husband and father with a mysterious past, whose wife and daughter are murdered in a home invasion.
He hopes for justice, but a rising prosecutor named Nick Rice (Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx, Ray) cuts a deal with one of the killers in exchange for testimony.
10 years later, that murderer is found dead, and Shelton coolly admits his guilt.
He then hands Rice an ultimatum: Fix the broken legal system or suffer the consequences.
It turns out Shelton has a plan to assassinate anyone supporting what he sees as a corrupt criminal justice system.
Also starring Irish actor Colm Meaney (Con Air), Law Abiding Citizen earned mostly negative reviews from critics, with many taking issue with its increasingly implausible story and over-the-top violence.
That said, it was better received by fans, as evidenced by its strong box office performance and high IMDB score of 7.4.
This is no doubt thanks to its gripping cat-and-mouse antics between Rice and Shelton, as well as its thought-provoking exploration of the moral dilemmas that emerge when a justice system fails.
Law Abiding Citizen is airing on TV tonight on Sky Max at 10pm. It's also currently streaming on Netflix and NOW.
