A private jet can emit two tonnes of CO2 in just an hour

Kylie Jenner has come under fire for a social media post in which she brags about having to choose which private jet to take.

The reality star posted a picture on Instagram of her and partner Travis Scott embracing in between two private jets.

This was accompanied by the caption: “You wanna take mine or yours?”

The 24-year-old shared the picture on Instagram (@kyliejenner/Instagram)

Whilst the post was met with a predictably positive reaction from family members – Kris Jenner commented ‘decisions decisions’ whilst Kourtney Kardashian replied ‘yours please’ – many criticised Jenner for the environmental impact of private jets.

These aircraft have been found to emit two tonnes of CO2 in just one hour and are five to 14 times more polluting than commercial planes, according to Transport & Environment.

In a comment that has since been liked more than 45,000 times, one person asked: “Why do I have to limit my meat consumption and use paper straws while the 1% gets to pump tons of carbon into the atmosphere for a day trip to Palm Springs?”

Another said: “This is why we need to tax the rich.”

A third pointed out the “hypocrisy” the next time Jenner makes “global warming awareness posts.”

And someone else wrote: “Rich people unapologetically showing off their contributions to climate change by using private jet to a 2 hours drive car ride. Yeah I would be embarrassed to post this.”

The backlash spread to Twitter as well, where some aviation sleuths worked out that the trip Jenner and Scott made on the jet (we have no idea which one they picked) was from Camarillo, California, to Van Nuys, California.

The flight lasted just 12 minutes, a journey that takes just 40 minutes by car.

Several pointed out the double standards of the general public being urged to make environmentally friendly lifestyle choices whilst celebrities fly around in private jets.
