Karl Pilkington made a pretty risky joke about the fate of Harambe the gorilla

Straight-talking Karl

Everyone has an opinion on Harambe the gorilla and whether his sad death was necessary.

The animal was fatally shot in its enclosure at Cincinnati Zoo after a young boy had fallen in. Some think that the zoo keepers were left with no choice but to pull the trigger – while others didn’t believe the child was in immediate danger.

One view on the incident you probably hadn’t been expecting to hear, though, was that of Karl Pilkington. The An Idiot Abroad star was asked for his opinion on the matter during a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything.

A Redditor using the title Humange asked: “With the news about the gorilla being shot in the Cincinnati zoo, what is your take on the situation? I miss monkey news.”

Never one to dodge the big issues, Pilkington’s jokey response was straight to the point, if not a teeny bit controversial. He said: “It annoyed me that. There’s only about 700 gorillas in the world and yet there’s loads of kids.”

He wasn’t the only one to stick up for the gorilla. Long-term collaborator and fierce animals rights defender Ricky Gervais also had his say on social media. His tweet in the wake of the incident seemed to imply that the parents should take a share of the blame for what happened.
