John Oliver slams the Royal Family and warns Meghan Markle about what she’s marrying into

The comedian has pulled no punches.

John Oliver has rarely hidden his views about the Royal Family, in fact, he’s very public about them. During a previous interview with Seth Meyers, the comedian was asked about the royal engagement between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Oliver said: “It is very difficult for me to give less of a sh*t than I give now. Americans definitely care more than British people do. It’s just Americans. Americans love the idea of watching British people do something objectively silly.”

That articulately summed up what some people think about the Royal Wedding.

Oliver hasn’t backtracked on those views, in fact, he elaborated on them during a recent interview with Stephen Colbert.

“I would not blame her (Meghan Markle) if she pulled out of this at the last minute. I don’t think you need to have just seen the pilot episode of The Crown to get a basic sense she might be marrying into a family that could cause some emotional complications,” Oliver told Stephen Colbert during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Referring to the entire Royal Family, Oliver added, “They’re an emotionally stunted group of fundamentally flawed people doing a very silly pseudo-job. That’s what she’s marrying into. So I hope she likes it — it’s going to be weird for her. I would not marry into the Royal Family. I’m a commoner. I would not be welcome, especially after what I just said.”

The comedian also said that receiving a knighthood is strange because “it’s just weird to kneel in front of another adult,” and that “it’s an odd thing to still have.”

Oliver did say that he likes royal weddings but only for the same reasons that he likes fireworks, “It’s a spectacle, it’s something nice to look at,” he said.
