Jeremy Clarkson spins car into the Who Wants to be a Millionaire? studio in first look at new series

"I don't like to make an entrance"

Kyle Picknell

Cars, obviously. He likes cars. And terrible shirts.

Clarkson is back and he’s wearing more terrible shirts in the new trailer for ITV’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, which, predictably, involves him driving a car and talking to camera as though the Top Gear keys were never handed over to Joey Tribbiani, and as though absolutely anyone in the world actually watched Amazon’s Grand Tour.

In the trailer Clarkson fires a lovely Aston Martin around the studio, drifting around corners and flicking the wheel with his typical pudgy-fingered pomp, all with the dramatic narration he’s known for.

“There really is nothing quite like it. It’s exciting, invigorating, and with every second you get more and more engrossed. One wrong move, and it’s all over. But with one final daredevil lunge, it could change your life.”

When he does eventually take the famous host’s seat, kept warm by the buttocks of Chris Tarrant for sixteen years, he does his trademark look off camera, say something very, very mildly witty – it won’t make you laugh and you’ll probably acknowledge it with a tilt of the head and the eyebrows – and turn back, and then grin, all knowing, as though he’s just dropped another corker.

In this instance it’s the line “I don’t like to make an entrance”, very subtly playing on the fact he has just driven an expensive car about like a man possessed. It’s very clever. It really is.

You can watch the new trailer in full below, with the show returning to our screens for seven episodes in May.
