You won’t be able to guess the turn this new sci-fi horror trailer takes

We thought we knew where this was going... it turns out we had zero idea

A first trailer hit the web this week for the new sci-fi horror movie Infinity Pool and boy, is it a wild one. The film stars Alexander Skarsgård and Cleopatra Coleman as James and Em, a wealthy couple holidaying at an all-inclusive resort on the fictional island of La Tolqa. Guided by the seductive and mysterious Gabi (Mia Goth, X), the couple venture outside the resort grounds during which time, James hits someone with his car. To his horror, James discovers that the crime for any punishment committed on the island is death. However, for a hefty fee, he is allowed to have a clone of himself rapidly grown to stand in for his execution. Clip via Neon While this in itself would probably already be enough nightmare fuel to sustain a sci-fi horror, the trailer continues - showing Gabi, James and others engaging in various hedonistic and violent acts post-execution. Even more disturbing is the fact that they are wearing extremely grotesque-looking face masks which are implied to be made out of human skin. The movie is written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg, who made one of the best sci-fi horrors of recent years with 2020's Possessor. He also happens to be the son of legendary filmmaker David Cronenberg. Infinity Pool will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the US next month. Clip via Focus Features In this new sports comedy, which also does not have an Irish release date yet, a former minor-league basketball coach (Woody Harrelson) is ordered by the court to manage a team of players with intellectual disabilities.

M3GAN

Clip via Universal Pictures A life-like doll programmed to be a child's greatest companion gets a mind of its own and becomes murderous in this much-anticipated horror set for an Irish release date on 13 January.

The Pale Blue Eye

Clip via Netflix In this gothic mystery landing on Netflix on 6 January 2023, a veteran detective (Christian Bale) investigates a series of murders at the United States Military Academy in West Point in New York in 1830. He is aided by Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling), a young cadet at the academy.

Skinamarink

Clip via Shudder Currently sitting on a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, this horror centres on two children who wake up in the middle of the night to find their father missing and all the windows and doors in their home disappeared. It does not have an Irish release date as of yet.

You People

Clip via Netflix In this comedy out on Netflix on 27 January, a couple (Jonah Hill and Lauren London) find themselves confronting societal expectations and generational differences amidst their families. Eddie Murphy, Nia Long, David Duchovny and Julia Louis-Dreyfus co-star.

Gen V

Clip via Prime Video Moving onto TV, this college-set spin-off to the superhero series The Boys premieres on Amazon Prime Video in 2023.

Hunters Season 2

Clip via Prime Video This Prime Video series about a team of Nazi hunters returns for its second and final season on 13 January.

Perry Mason Season 2

Clip via HBO Also returning for a second season soon is this excellent HBO period legal drama starring Matthew Rhys (The Americans). It will premiere in Ireland sometime after its US release date on 6 March.
