Harrison Ford has been calling for Han Solo’s death for 30 years

WARNING: this article contains seismic spoilers for anyone weird enough not to have seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens yet.

Harrison Ford has said that he’s spent the best part of 30 years arguing that Han Solo should be killed off from the legendary movie series.

Poor old Solo did meet his shocking demise in the most recent film, but Ford wrote in a Q&A on Entertainment Weekly’s Tumblr that he thinks it should have happened several decades ago.

If you’re a Star Wars fan reading this, and fear Harrison Ford secretly hated Star Wars as much as Sir Alec Guinness did, then never fear – his reasoning was based on the significance an earlier death could have had on the story.

When asked how he felt about The Force Awakens’ ending, Ford said: “I think it’s a fitting use of the character. I’ve been arguing for Han Solo to die for about 30 years, not because I was tired of him or because he’s boring, but his sacrifice for the other characters would lend gravitas and emotional weight.”

Although Ford may have bowed out of the franchise that made his name, it doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of the rebellious hero he once portrayed. It was revealed recently that a prequel spinoff will tell the story of how Han and his loveable co-pilot Chewbacca first met.
