One of the most divisive superhero movies ever is on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

The final chapter in the superhero saga is also available to stream easily.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 13 August) is Glass, the 2019 conclusion to writer-director M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable/Split trilogy.

Set following the events of Split, it begins with the villainous Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy) – a man with dissociative identity disorder and super-strength – still on the run.

As such, the super-powered hero vigilante David Dunn (Bruce Willis) tries to track him down and stop his crimes.

Just as they manage to confront each other, the pair are captured and subdued by an enigmatic doctor named Ellie Staple (Sarah Paulson) and whisked away to a psychiatric hospital.

There, Dr. Staple tells them that she believes both Crumb and Dunn are not super-powered but are just suffering from delusions of grandeur.

Amidst all this, another patient is being housed at the same hospital – supervillain Elijah Price aka Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson), who Dunn previously faced-off with in Unbreakable.

Co-starring Anya Taylor-Joy as one of Crumb’s former victims who escaped, Glass split (get it?) audiences right down the middle when it landed in theatres.

On one level, it’s easy to see why. Its mostly one-location setting, elegiac tone and unusual story perhaps landed strangely amidst the wave of more bright and fizzy Marvel movies being released around the same time.

We’d argue, however, that Glass’ superb performances, its genuinely unpredictable story and its exploration of why humans are fascinated with superheroes makes it well-worth seeking out.

Plus, there is a real thrill in seeing the worlds of Split and Unbreakable come together on-screen.

Glass is airing on TV tonight on Film4 at 11.10pm. It is also currently streaming on Disney+ and Netflix.
