The TV star has been battling bowel cancer

First Dates TV star Merlin Griffiths has updated fans with the latest progression on his battle with cancer.

The barman on the hit Channel 4 programme revealed on Monday that he has had his stoma removed after nine months during a five-night stay in hospital.

A stoma is an opening which is made on the abdomen during surgery, to divert waste out of the body and into a colostomy bag.

Griffiths was first diagnosed with bowel cancer in September and has since been undergoing radiotherapy as part of his treatment on the road to recovery.

Sharing a photo of him in his hospital dressing gown to his Twitter followers, the 47-year-old said: “Gosh, it’s very odd knowing all my insides are actually inside me again after 9 months of a #stoma.

“Next step, farting. Then food. #NHS #Cancer #Surgery.”

He seemed to be in good spirits as he followed up with another update, saying: “My plumbing works then. Cor blimey. This will take some training and getting used to. Thank goodness for Kegels! Essential!!

“Pull up nappy deployed for safety. Need a biscuit. #Stoma #Reversal #Cancer.”

Fans of the show have been delighted to hear his latest update and offered support to the popular member of the First Dates programme.

One user tweeted: “Glad to hear your op has been a success & have everything crossed for you during the healing process.”

Another said: “Get well soon, Merlin. My husband and I met you a few years ago in Coventry. You are a complete gentleman. Sending you so much love and strength xx.”
