Sony pictures revenue drops 13% as crunchyroll grows

Sony Pictures Entertainment posted a 13% drop in revenue for the quarter ended 30 June, falling to $1.978 billion, even as operating income rose 20% to $156 million, Variety reported. Growth at anime service Crunchyroll helped cushion the decline.
What is behind the Sony Pictures dip
The company said the sales decline was driven by a decrease in series deliveries in television productions, which fell 32% to $571 million, along with lower theatrical revenue of $30 million in the quarter, down from $132 million a year earlier. Higher revenue from Crunchyroll came mainly from paid subscriber growth, with the service reporting more than 21 million paid subscribers as of the end of March and continuing to add users through the June quarter.
The picture was brighter elsewhere in the wider Sony group. The music segment saw revenue rise 21%, while the PlayStation games unit reported flat sales but a 37% jump in operating income, driven by US tariff refunds.
The results underline how Sony is leaning on anime, music and gaming to steady its film division through a quieter period for television and theatrical output. Attention now turns to the studio's upcoming slate to reverse the theatrical slide.
